4. Richard Dreyfuss - Douglas Quaid (Total Recall)
Richard Dreyfuss is certainly an actor better suited to playing a character with the name "Douglas Quaid," which I've never felt like Arnold Schwarzenegger was. That minor gripe aside, though, trying to envision Jaws' Matt Hooper racing around Mars, looking at three-breasted mutants, and spouting lines like "Screw you!" is insane. Dreyfuss signed onto to star in the big screen version of Total Recall in the mid-'80s, back when it was written as more of a psychological drama than a balls to the walls action movie. Eventually he dropped out because the production process seemed like it was never-ending, and man gotta work, right? When Arnie signed on to the movie the entire script was re-written as a violent action thriller, and much of the Dreyfuss version was lost in the process. Still, you can close your eyes and imagine what might've resulted if Dreyfuss had made the Arnie version of the movie instead. Now there's a movie.
