Above all, movies are an investment. Nobody funds a movie out of the sheer kindness of their hearts without expecting something in return, regardless of artistic integrity. You don't give away millions of dollars to a product you don't believe will succeed, after all. Yes, the true, inarguable intention of any motion picture is to make money - a notion that peeves those who like to think of cinema as "pure artistry." Unfortunately, cinema is still a business. Point is, a movie exists as a means of profit; the people who make movies do so with dollar signs in their eyes. To think otherwise is somewhat obtuse, because a flop usually designates game over for all those involved. Studios and producers need their cinematic ventures to pull in the punters; it's a terrifying game of "will they, won't they?" each and every time a movie find its way into theatres, as audiences decide whether or not to bite. And the more money you put into a project, of course, the more money you stand to lose if it all goes horribly wrong.
