Though it's difficult to believe quite how many amazing films are on the horizon in the next 2 years, it's important to remember that, in a best case scenario, they will be the cream of the crop, and there will be countless ventures that will flop hard, either critically, commercially, or as is most embarrassing of all, with pundits and audiences. Many have noted how 2013 has been "the year of the box office bomb", with a multitude of seeming box office juggernauts, such as After Earth, The Lone Ranger, R.I.P.D. and so on, bringing in paltry returns against their considerable investments. The problem with these films is that they should never have been positioned to be box office blowouts in the first place; each project showed minimal promise at most from the outset, and audiences were intelligent enough to see through the marketing hype. However, the future release slate makes it clear that the bombs aren't going away, and the next 12 months of cinema has its own array of flops just waiting to happen. Here are 10 upcoming blockbusters doomed to bomb at the box office. Note: all releases dates listed are for the US...
10. The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (Aug 21)
Budget: $60 million Predicted Box Office: $70 million Why It's Going To Bomb: Though based on the first book of The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare, there's absolutely nothing about this film that distinguishes it from the litany of generic tween fantasy films fired our way every year. Furthermore, it hasn't got any young name actors in the lead roles, rather a bunch of up-and-comers who are still trying to make names for themselves. Though it's adapted from popular source material, so were Beautiful Creatures and The Host, and both of them proved box office flops earlier in the year. The trailer seems to promise a portentous, self-important mess that will hopefully disappear from cinemas in a blink.
