4. Avengers: Infinity War
Marvel Studios' biggest movie to date is also arguably the one most likely to backfire. It is a fact that at some point in the history of any successful superhero franchise, people will always complain that there were 'too many characters'. Looking at the loaded ensemble for Avengers: Infinity War, the Russo brothers need to do a hell of a job behind the camera to stop this thing going off the rails.
The cast list is absolutely stacked; Thanos, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Spider-Man, Vision, Scarlett Witch, Black Panther, War Machine, Loki, Doctor Strange, Falcon, Ant-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Holy sh*t. That isn't even mentioning the cross-franchise supporting characters also set to appear.
This 'more is more' approach is always a difficult thing to pull off correctly in a blockbuster movie, running the risk of bombarding the audience with so many images that they lose interest. 'The Transformers Effect', if you will. And with Infinity War no longer tied into being the first half of a two-parter it has to tell an even more complete story than before.
People have wrongly predicted the downfall of Marvel before, but Infinity War could legitimately buckle under the weight of its own ambition and with so much riding on it as a potentially-iconic cinematic event, the pressure the creative team finds themselves under must be staggering.
