How It Lost Fans

It wasn't the worst movie in the world by any means, but 2016's Ghostbusters reboot was rejected by fans from the second it was announced, and it never really recovered from that hate (its first trailer has an astonishing 1 million dislikes on YouTube).

Those who'd hoped to see a true continuation of the Ghostbusters story instead had to settle for the original cast doing wink-wink nudge-nudge cameos, and the poor response to the film seemed to kill any chances of seeing Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson suit up ever again.

How It's Trying To Win Them Back

Thankfully, the Ghostbusters franchise isn't completely dead, and a proper third film in the series will be seen in 2020.

In an effort to please fans, this new entry is doing whatever it can to separate itself from the divisive 2016 instalment... by simply ignoring it. Ghostbusters 2020 will be a direct sequel to the first two films, with the original cast returning to reprise their roles. As if that wasn't enough of a fan-baiting move, the movie is being directed by Jason Reitman - son of Ivan Reitman, the man who created this franchise 35 years ago.

Ghostbusters 2020 is almost pandering to the fans who bashed Ghostbusters 2016, but considering that Reitman is a strong director, it at least seems like the movie is trying to strike the right balance between nostalgia and quality filmmaking.
