Although superhero movies have always been popular, lucrative properties, audiences have never been subjected to them with the same ferocious frequency as they are today. Since Marvel opened the door for entire universes with the MCU though (and made a ridiculous amount of money in doing so), every studio with access to their own heroes has attempted to get in on the action, announcing a whole slew of comic-book movies that'll keep audiences occupied for the next decade or so.

In fact, it's resulted in an unprecedented amount of reboots and sequels, most of which have actually turned out pretty well. With that said, while it's seemingly easier than ever for a superhero movie to be greenlit and even fast-tracked to release, there have been some movies over the years that studios were eager to announce and push for, but which ended up languishing in development hell for years.

And after so long, no matter how much they insist that yes, they are still coming, even going as far to share potential start dates for shooting, fans know deep down that they're probably, almost certainly, never actually going to happen. They can keep talking about them all they want, but until they're lighting up a cinema near you, you probably shouldn't hold your breath.
