This twist would just be heroically silly if it wasn'€™t in such bad taste. At first glance, it looks as if this is just another Robert Pattinson romantic drama vehicle, with two attractive people growing up emotionally and realising they love each other during their respective stints at New York University. They€™'ve both got huge emotional baggage -€“ she witnessed her mother being killed, his brother committed suicide €“- and fathers they don'€™t get on with.

The plot is pretty identikit for one of these films, with the characters having wedges that come between them, the fact Pattinson started the relationship in revenge against her father arresting him -€“ pretty creepy, really €“ and later, the aforementioned father€™s' totally righteous fury. But as we all know, true love conquers all and the two characters end up back together.

Then, it gets absurd. We learn that it€™'s September 11th 2001 and that Tyler is waiting in his father€™'s office in €“- you guessed it €“- the World Trade Center€™'s north tower, and Tyler is killed. It€™'s just so completely out of nowhere that it€™'s not even a twist €“ it'€™s just a slap in the face.

Literally nothing pointed toward this happening, nothing at all, and yet here we are, having effectively been pied in the face by the movie€™s risible attempt to create a memorable finale.

Frankly, it€™'s just insane and a little bit offensive -€“ you€™'d have thought someone would have sat the scriptwriters down and told them they weren'€™t being clever, but instead, this appears to have made it through the Hollywood system without anyone cocking an eyebrow. Utterly bizarre.
