10 Video Nasties That Became Horror Classics

9. Tenebrae

King of giallo Dario Argento has always had a rocky relationship with censors and a number of his movies including Suspiria and Deep Red were tagged as video nasties but only Tenebrae was prosecuted and subsequently banned.

Typically stylish, Argento’s Tenebrae was in stark contrast to its fellow prosecuted movies which tended to be grainy exploitation flicks with obviously low budgets but it nevertheless ruffled the feathers of Britain’s self-appointed moral guardians who objected to its supposedly sexualised, mysogynistic violence and high body count and the effect that might have on us lowly proles.

It’s ironic then that Tenebrae – which features a serial killer compelled to commit murder by a book – was itself addressing the very same issues the video nasty movement were up in arms about but that seemed to fly over their heads.

Nowadays, Tenebrae is rightfully considered by many as not only one of Argento’s best films but one of the giallo genre’s too.
