According to the outlet that broke the news about Benedict Cumberbatch joining the cast of Spider-Man 3, Doctor Strange will serve as Peter Parker's new mentor in the threequel. They first met during the events of Avengers: Infinity War, and while this feels like a misdirect, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's wall-crawler has a habit of gravitating towards father figures.
First, there was Iron Man. Then, Mysterio. However, it seems Quentin Beck's betrayal wasn't enough to put Spidey off seeking out another in the form of Stephen Strange.
It seems Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige is taking cues from J. Michael Straczynski's Amazing Spider-Man comic book run (he provided a foreword in that and later borrowed Aunt May learning her nephew's secret identity from it for Spider-Man: Homecoming). In that, Strange was a frequent ally of the hero, and helped him on many a mission.
