In theory, digital storage sounds like a far easier alternative to storing a bunch of film reels, yet so problematic and expensive is archiving a digital movie that a long-term solution still hasn't really been devised for it. After all, while film prints will degrade over decades, a hard drive can suffer a random, fatal read-write error and render everything on it completely inaccessible, seemingly for no reason; at least if a print gets a scratch on it, you're going to know why. The result of the current digital storage solution is that data needs to be constantly backed up and uploaded to a new series of hard drives to deny decay, an ongoing process that doesn't really seem to have an end in sight. Furthermore, the nature of digital storage means that during production, a film can quite easily be erased entirely when placed in the wrong hands; watch the above video and learn how Toy Story 2 was very nearly wiped out of existence, if not for an employee who kept a back-up at her home so she could spend more time with her kids.
