10 Weird Sci-Fi Horror Movies Of The 80s
2. The Dungeonmaster
Also known as Ragewar and Digital Knights, The Dungeonmaster follows a tech whiz called Paul who's transported alongside his girlfriend to a computerised realm, ruled by a demonic wizard called Mestema. Fascinated by technology, the warlock forces the pair to complete hazardous challenges or "levels" before facing him in a death match.
The story meshes genres, including swords & sorcery, sci-fi, cyberpunk, fantasy, and horror. It contains a variety of monsters, like zombies, golems, and goblins, which are brought to life with animatronics, puppets, elaborate makeup, and stop-motion. The Dungeonmaster juggles so many ideas, it shouldn't really work.
And it doesn't... like, at all. Despite being rife with innovation and impressive practical effects, the jumbled hodgepodge can't make up its mind what it's trying to be. One moment, our hero is involved in a Mad Max-inspired chase, the next, he's battling samurai and ice beasts.
It's important for a story to have variety, but The Dungeonmaster feels like a different film every few minutes (which isn't surprising, considering it was helmed by seven directors).
Even though the episodic tale had potential, it never comes together.
