Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas sees Depp taking on the role of Raoul Duke, the (alarmingly) only-slightly fictionalised version of Hunter S. Thompson, with whom he struck up a close friendship. He went and lived with Thompson to prepare for the role, studying his mannerisms, driving around in his car and using the writers own signature clothes - such as the Hawaiian shirts and hat - in order to full transform into the character. Thompson himself even shaved Depps head bald, in order to match his own. Its a completely crazed and twisted tale of drugs, Vegas, drugs, a motorcycle race, drugs, and driving through the desert. Oh, and drugs. Really, no plot summary could truly encapsulate the psychedelic road trip, but it says a lot that Depps performance - from capturing Thompsons mannerisms and delivery, to having to react in different ways to different drugs, and experience hallucinations - more than matches it.
