10 Weirdest Roles Of Johnny Depp's Career (So Far)

By James Hunt /

4. Edward Scissorhands

The other claimant to being the best of Burton and Depp, Edward Scissorhands also marked the first time that the pair actually worked together. This is a magical gothic fairytale of a Frankenstein€™s monster-type, near-human boy who has scissors for hands, because his inventor died before he could give him real ones. The plot sounds fantastical, but it€™s grounded in realistic suburbia and really brought to life by Depp€™s performance, which is one of the best of his career. Under layers of make-up and prosthetics, his dialogue is kept to a minimum but he manages to say absolutely everything with his facial expressions. He manages to convey perfectly, and heartbreakingly, all the loneliness, anxiety, desire, innocence and tragedy of the character without having to really say any of it. He also shares superb chemistry with Winona Ryder, who was then his real-life girlfriend. This may be one of the weirdest roles Depp has taken on, but it€™s also one of the sweetest.
