Trent Lane was this poor, misunderstood teenage soul that every vaguely alternative girl was in love with. How were the young versions of ourselves supposed to resist this magical unicorn of angst? Trent was Jane's older brother, the cool, cynical, laid-back guy who is allergic to work of any kind unless it involves playing the guitar and fighting against society's expectations. He was like that older guy we all knew, the one who wasn't going to college but had a really kicking band that was going to take off any day now, but if it didn't that was cool too, because labels are run by the Man and they would sooner be homeless than sell out. He drove a van around town in a way that totally didn't come off as creepy, and he stole our hearts. Our collective experience of the edgy, grunge-influenced early 90s never would have been the same without Trent Lane.
