2. Spiderman 3 - Spiderman Goes Disco

Sam Raimi’s Spiderman trilogy was a trailblazer for the current trend in superhero flicks. It was, after all, the first to really encapsulate the essence of a comic book while also connecting with wider audiences. It has gone down well in cinematic history despite a lacklustre third entry.

Plagued by studio interference from day one, with Villain Venom being shoehorned in alongside originally planned Sandman. Raimi was likely never going to be able to capture the magic of the first two films in the face of such difficulty.

Needing a way to show that the black suit had turned Peter down a darker path, they had plenty of options. From having Peter turn violent and dangerous (a throwback to his anger leading to the death of Uncle Ben's killer) to having Peter turn away from being the friendly neighbourhood Spider-man.

Having Peter Parker dancing like a drunk dad at a wedding seems like the darkest possible timeline, and made it impossible to see it as a sign of our hero turning villainous. It disconnected audiences from the film in such a way that even their love of the first two films couldn’t pave over the painfully weak third act.
