5. Charlie Goes Into The Light - The Whale

The Whale is a terrific-if-polarising drama which quite rightly won Brendan Fraser the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Charlie, a morbidly obese man attempting to repair his frayed relationship with his daughter Ellie (Sadie Sink).

Yet director Darren Aronofsky ends up fumbling the bag slightly with one off-kilter filmmaking choice at the very end of the film.

In the final scene, Charlie stands up and walks towards Ellie without assistance, at which point father and daughter smile at one another, before Charlie suddenly levitates into the air and is engulfed in a white light. The End.

Aronofsky has never been a subtle filmmaker, but this was a little much - a melodramatic, film student-caliber choice, to have Charlie literally going towards the light in what's presumed to be his dying moments.

It can't derail the brilliance of Fraser's performance or the many quality filmmaking choices leading up to the end, but it is a head-scratchingly over-the-top note on which to conclude the story.
