The original trilogy had the Death Star and then the Death Star 2.0, which was already a fairly lazy proposition, and then The Force Awakens had the Starkiller Base, which oddly paled in comparison to the prior villainous lairs and just felt a bit underwhelming. Considering how played-out the notion of a massive base with a ridiculous vulnerability is, can we just forget about this for Episode VIII? Perhaps have Snoke, Ren and co. operating out of a number of smaller bases which allow them to keep mobile and undetected by the resistance? It feels like they're struggling to come up with a way to top the Death Star, so simply, why bother? There are plenty of other alternatives.
