Why He Might Win: Andy Serkis has been due some sort of Oscar recognition for over 15 years, with his performance-captured work in the Lord of the Rings and Planet of the Apes franchises working in perfect tandem with state-of-the-art visual effects tech.

Maybe, just maybe, his upcoming adaptation of The Jungle Book might help finally turn the tide for the Academy's historic prejudice against performance capture getting awards love. Serkis is the unrivalled master of the art form, and a Best Supporting Actor Oscar here would be long-overdue recognition.

Why It's Unexpected: The fact that Serkis was snubbed for his work as Gollum and Caesar is proof enough that he's being discriminated against, so even if the Academy did change their stance on performance capture acting, it'd be a huge shock.
