The Role: Davis plays the title character, a nanny to a put-upon mother-of-three (Charlize Theron), but beyond that, little is known.
Why She Might Win: This one's more a gut feeling than anything, because writer-director Jason Reitman (Up in the Air, Young Adult) has been extremely tight-lipped about almost all plot details. Does this mean he has a secret weapon up his sleeve, in Davis' performance?
Sure, this could ultimately all be a Best Actress sprint for Charlize Theron, but Davis, who has quietly been chipping away at her craft over the last few years, could easily bag a Best Supporting Actress award if Reitman gives us another Up in the Air rather than another Labour Day.
Why It's Unexpected: For one, the covert nature of the role and the movie itself makes it hard to totally gauge her chances and worthiness, but also because she's still an on-the-rise talent whose name isn't yet known to a lot of people.
