12 Awesome 2014 Movies That Deserve Best Picture (But Won't Get Nominated)

12. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 89% (7.6 average) Why It Deserves Best Picture: Aside from being one of the strongest efforts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to date, Captain America: The Winter Soldier built considerably on the solid foundations of the first film, serving up a smart, thrilling blockbuster that balanced itself perfectly between action and a thoughtful plot with enormous relevance in our current political climate. Much like The Dark Knight, it's a reminder that comic book movies and blockbusters as a whole can aspire to something more universal and intriguing than what audiences are used to, and that should totally be recognised. Why It Won't Get Nominated: Because it's a comic book movie, basically, and the middle-aged voters of AMPAS couldn't even bring themselves to vote for the (admittedly rather superior) Dark Knight, so why would they bother voting for a superhero movie they've likely not seen and already dismissed as "silly nonsense"?
