Rotten Tomatoes Score: 86% (7.9 average) Why It Deserves Best Picture: There is absolutely no film released this year (or perhaps in any other) quite like Jonathan Glazer's mesmerising sci-fi drama Under the Skin. Giving Scarlett Johansson easily her best role to date, Glazer's film is more than merely "the one where she gets naked", it's a jaw-dropping examination of how an alien creature would perceive the world around us, with all of the various eccentricities that make us human. It's also visually stunning from top to bottom, switching between the bleakly beautiful Scottish landscapes and the more surreal aspects of Johansson's enigmatic character. It doesn't serve up easy answers, is relatively scant on dialogue and asks the viewer to think for themselves, but for the discerning, patient viewer, the results are nothing short of marvelous. Why It Won't Get Nominated: It's just too "arty" for the Oscars. With its minimalist premise and lack of hand-holding, it won't do enough for a lot of voters, and they might not find the ground-breaking sci-fi worthy enough of a nod, sadly.
