The Halloween franchise is a difficult one to follow in terms of continuity, because the studios have never been shy about trying to cash in on Michael Myers' iconic status.

Eventually, they realised that they needed a soft reboot to tidy everything up, bringing back Laurie Strode, casting off her daughter who had become the lead of the series in her absence and simply ignoring everything other than the first two movies.

It was a successful decision, with H20 improving on all of those sequels and enjoying a nostalgic boost thanks to Laurie's return, so you can forgive the rather over-zealous rejection of everything in the other four movies.
