5. Lake Mungo (2008)
Lake Mungo is a slow-burn, to say the least. It isn't action-packed or brimming with jump scares. Rather, it takes a documentary-style look at a family in the aftermath of their daughters drowning. This isn't a found-footage movie per se, rather it's a portrait of a grieving family as they come to realise one of their loved ones may have been keeping dark and troubling secrets.
The fascinating thing about this film is the way the story unfolds. Alice Palmer dies almost immediately as the movie begins, and there doesn't seem to be all that much mystery surrounding her demise. Later, some curious developments arise but are usually explained before the next piece of the puzzle comes into play.
That might not sound so titillating but the red herrings (or lack thereof) build over time into an uncomfortable paranoia. What, if anything, is really going on with the death of Alice Palmer? You have to watch closely to see.
