2. A Boy And His Dog
The innocuous-sounding A Boy and His Dog follows the titular duo as they trek across a post-apocalyptic America in search of their next meal, and stumble across a bizarre underground society modeled on pre-apocalypse America. Oh, did I mention the dog is a telepathic misanthrope who frequently encourages to the Boy (played by a young Don Johnson) to seek out and rape women in exchange for food? (just go with it)
Based on a novella by legendary sci-fi author Harlan Ellison, who infamously hated the changes made to his source material, A Boy and His Dog is exactly the sort of bonkers, high-concept social sci-fi that could've only been made in the 1970s. It's a film as bleak as its landscapes and as misanthropic as its leads, a pitch-black comedy whose humor comes mostly from the sheer absurdity/tenacity of it all.
Character actor-turned-director L. Q. Jones makes a strong impression in his portrayal of the strange, half-crazed pocket civilizations that seem to foreshadow similar ideas in Mad Max and the Fallout franchise.
