Loaded with two-dimensional characters, wooden dialogue and offering very little in the way of thrills or excitement, Need For Speed still managed to become a box office success thanks to remarkably strong overseas numbers. Debuting in third place at the domestic box office with a disappointing $17.8m, many were already labeling the movie as a flop by the end of its opening weekend. However, over 78% of Need For Speed's worldwide total came from the international box office, where it proved to be incredibly popular. The movie's biggest market was China, where it opened to $21m and went on to earn $66.2m by the end of its theatrical run, becoming one of an increasing number of Hollywood productions that earn more in China than the United States, turning a domestic disappointment into an international hit.
