Despite being one of 2018's most-anticipated films, Venom dominated the box-office with a 'little engine that could' kind of reputation. Trashed for its cheesy humour and generic action sequences, it didn't go down well with critics, but that wasn't enough to stop audiences flocking to see it.

As a result, the film massively overperformed and, thanks in no small part to its incredible performance in China, came a lot closer to the one-billion mark than it had any business of being. Looking back now, it should have been more obvious, given that the character is a comic book legend and, well, Tom Hardy.

Despite all that, Captain Marvel managed to soar past its ridiculously impressive total in just a few short weeks. Of course, a large part of her success could be attributed to the fact that she had the luxury of being under the MCU umbrella (something that Venom did not). Nonetheless, it's still impressive that she managed to outperform one of 2018's unlikeliest film titans.
