Thor: Ragnarok marked the third MCU installment to focus directly on the character and, given how his popularity had soared in the four years since Thor: The Dark World, it's no surprise that its takings blew its predecessors out of the water.

Having said that, one would think that, on paper at least, Thor's prominent role in The Avengers and the clever marketing campaign that went into Ragnarok (especially those trailers that highlighted the film's "cool" new tone) would have been enough to propel it into the one-billion club. But alas, it fell slightly short, "only" making a shade over $850 million.

Taking Thor's status as an Avenger, the Incredible Hulk's guest-starring role and Jeff freakin' Goldblum all into account, it's rather shocking that the 2017 flick couldn't quite cross that coveted finish line. But it's even more shocking that Captain Marvel managed to decisively best an MCU heavyweight in such a short space of time, pulling in almost $200 million more (so far). Bravo Carol.
