An allegory for abandonment and identity, starring an alien with a glowing finger and a child struggling with the divorce of his parents who find soul mates in one another and get drunk. It's all very emotional and very uplifting in the end, despite some crushing blows.

Originally, E.T. was envisaged as a horror and a spiritual sequel to Close Encounters Of The Third Kind called Night Skies. It would have been directed by Tobe Hooper, would have featured alien designs by Rick Baker and would basically have been The Purge as a family were terrorized by a gang of evil aliens.

Needless to say, Baker's aliens were vastly more intimidating than E.T.'s final look so they were dropped when Spielberg decided not to terrify the living hell out of everyone and go with a family friendly approach instead over fears that it was all a bit racist.
