In 2013, the Hugh Jackman/Jake Gyllenhaal film Prisoners was one of the most underappreciated movies of the year, a well constructed thriller with truly memorable characters. Director Denis Villeneuve followed that up with the strange but intriguing Enemy, and his latest movie, Sicario, is definitely worth keeping an eye out for.

Sicario is another Villeneuve thriller, this time following an Arizona FBI agent played by Emily Blunt who's recruited to track down a notorious drug lord. Naturally, things spiral out of control. The movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and received mostly positive reviews, currently holding an impressive 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. From early reactions, it sounds like it's extremely tense and once again packed with great characters, although it might end up being too bleak for some audiences to fully embrace.

Villeneuve's film also has potential to earn Emily Blunt some much deserved recognition as a strong dramatic actress. After proving herself to be a highly capable performer beyond The Devil Wears Prada in Looper, Edge Of Tomorrow, and Into The Woods, this is looking to be Blunt's most impressive role to date, with Scott Foundas from Variety comparing her performance to Jodie Foster's in The Silence of the Lambs.

If Sicario is anywhere near as good as Prisoners was, let's Denis Villeneuve finally gets the appreciation he deserves.
