12. Castration Implication - Hard Candy

2005's Hard Candy is a reminder that looks can be deceiving.

Upon first glance, Ellen Page's youthful appearance and teenage dialect would lead the viewer to believe her character isn't capable of such brutal revenge tactics.

Hard Candy is a tough film to watch, not only for its uncomfortable topic, but one particular scene involving Jeff, a paedophile and rapist who's involvement in a local girl's disappearance and Page's character, Hayley, a 14 year old girl with an appetite for vengeance. Hayley straps Jeff to a table and, all while calmly talking him through the process, appears to remove his testicles.

It's Ellen Page's excellent performance that elevates the scene's brutality. Though the act is heinous, (as deserved as it may be) the docile, almost empathetic tone of voice Page uses is enough to instill a sense fear in the viewer as well as a wealth of unpredictability to the scene. Nervously awaiting Hayley's emotional response to Jeff's actions, only for it to never arrive, adds to the dread.

The operation never takes place, with Hayley using the numbness the ice creates to lead Jeff to believe his crown jewels were snipped. Regardless, it's a psychological trauma any man would wince at.
