Why It's Desperate: Where to begin? Tom Hooper (who won a Best Director Oscar for The King's Speech) helms this drama about one of the world's first sex reassignment patients, played by Eddie Redmayne, who of course won Best Actor at the most recent Oscar ceremony. Then there's on-the-rise actress Alicia Vikander playing opposite Redmayne, the score is provided by eight-time nominee (and one-time winner) Alexandre Desplat and cinematography is handled by Danny Cohen (nominated for The King's Speech). It's by far the "baitiest" of the Oscar contenders this year, broaching a subject that's had significant public attention over the last year or two, and so the Academy will be pressed to acknowledge its relevance. Will It Succeed?: Despite being widely expected to be a Best Picture frontrunner pre-release, the film's positive reviews have mostly centered around Redmayne's performance than the film entire. As such, the likely nods are for Best Actor (Redmayne), Best Supporting Actress (Vikander), Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Original Score and Best Costume Design. In terms of wins, don't be surprised if it's shut-out completely or only grabs a few below-the-line crafts victories. Nothing big here.
