12 Movie Sequels You Didn't Know Were Coming
12. Sherlock Holmes 3
It has been nine years since the last Sherlock Holmes movie, A Book of Shadows, which proved to be a moderate box office and critical success. While Robert Downey Jnr. has gone largely from strength to strength through his appearances as Tony Stark in the MCU, the same can't be said for co-star Jude Law. Outside of his one MCU appearance in Captain Marvel and and a decent lead performance in 2013's Side Effects, the big roles have largely dried up for Law in recent times.
A third Sherlock Holmes movie is due for release on December 22 2021, and what we know so far has proved fascinating. According to an article on IMDB, the lead characters will be confirmed to be gay- quite a turn up considering Dr.Watson was married to Mary Morstan in the last film. It's unclear if they will be declared to be a couple, but there seems little point to the reveal if this isn't the case.
Downey Jnr. and Law will both return to the roles of Holmes and Watson, and apparently Rachel McAdams will also be returning. This is the most surprising announcement, considering her character Irene Adler was brutally murdered in the opening act of the first sequel. Noomi Rapace, arguably the best aspect of A Game of Shadows, is also reported to return as Madam Heron. Another interesting development is that Guy Ritchie hasn't returned to the Director's chair, with Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrel's actor Dexter Fletcher taking the reins.
