5. The Purge: Election Year Takes Place In 2038

Though it was originally suspected that the third Purge movie was going to be a prequel, the release of the film's first trailer, along with its title, confirms that it's in not only a sequel, but also set much further in the future than anyone could have reasonably expected. That's right, The Purge: Election Year takes place 15 years after the previous film in 2038, where Frank Grillo's Sergeant character is now the Head of Security for a Senator (Elizabeth Mitchell) who is seeking to abolish the Purge, and becomes a target as a result. Considering that Grillo looks exactly the same as he did in the previous film, skipping so far ahead is a fairly questionable move, and given that these films will likely keep getting churned out until the grosses go down, it's surprising they leapt so far away temporally.
