12 Movies Christopher Nolan Should Make Next

By Jack Pooley /

5. A Western

A left-field pick for sure, but wouldn't it be great to see the director working in a totally different genre? Nolan has to date proven himself comfortable in noir-esque genres that feature a lot of scenes taking place at night in urban locations, and a western would invite the director to completely change that up. With his eye for visuals, penchant for femme fatale characters and focus on character psychology as a whole, he'd be a fine fit for a thoughtful western movie ala 2007's excellent Christian Bale-starring 3:10 to Yuma remake (which turned out to be vastly superior to the original). To see Nolan directing action scenes that involve horses and trains rather than complex, modern machines would be a fascinating test of his skills above all else. How Likely Is It?: Sadly, not particularly. Nolan has never really expressed a particular affinity for the genre in interviews, so if he did make a western, it would come totally out of nowhere, even if it'd actually be a pretty great fit for his writing-directing chops. 3/10.
