But as it turns out, Tag was yet another strong R-rated studio comedy in a year with a surprising number of them.

Yes, the sometimes cruel, harsh nature of its humour clearly wasn't for everyone - some maintain that the miscarriage gag was a step too far - but if you wanted to see Jeremy Renner giving his best Hawkeye performance ever alongside one of the best-matched comedy ensembles of the year, this was an easy sell.

Mostly delivering on the quirky potential of its premise and even serving up an unexpectedly affecting finale - even if, again, the climactic tonal shift doesn't work for everyone - Tag dared to challenge audience expectations and did so for the better.
