In every Captain America film so far, Bucky Barnes has held Captain America's shield in battle, as a nod towards him taking over the Cap mantle in the comics.

According to Sebastian Stan's contract, he has more MCU movies left to complete than Chris Evans does, and it really wouldn't be surprising if Marvel Studios decide to follow the comics and turn Bucky into a Cap legacy character (even if it's only temporarily).
He certainly wouldn't let his friend's legacy die, particularly when he needs to do some serious PR work on his own name.
