And now we have by far the least Oscar-friendly movie on this list.
Panos Cosmatos' surreal revenge thriller Mandy is about as anti-Oscars as they come, but it's damn sure more creative, entertaining, well-acted and successful at achieving its goals than Green Book. Unless we're counting "embarrassing the Academy" as a goal, of course. Too harsh? Nah.
Mandy's slow pace and offbeat tone won't be for all tastes, but between its neon-soaked visuals, killer score from the late, great Jóhann Jóhannsson and Nicolas Cage's deliciously unhinged performance, it was one of 2018's most singularly inventive films.
By comparison, Green Book is mouldy formulaic genre stodge. If Mandy is a rich, red-hot platter, Green Book is the most mild, tasteless, bland slop imaginable.
