The Ending
After the Ghostbusters are released from jail in order to rid New York City of the threat of Zuul, Vinz and Gozer, they triumphantly vanquish the demons - as well as the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Everyone is so impressed and grateful that the Ghostbusters are welcomed on the streets as conquering heroes.
A happy ending all round.
But Then...
In the sequel, pretty much everyone suffers from an extreme bout of amnesia and forgets the fact that The Ghostbusters literally saved the world. In the aftermath of the Stay Puft Incident, they're sued for property damage and barred from investigating supernatural events, which is pretty much EXACTLY what happened before Gozer arrived as well.
Did everyone suddenly forget the harrowing sight of a giant Marshmallow Man rampaging through the city? Or were they confident that literally the only people capable of stopping similar events would never be needed again to the point that they should be banned from being useful ever again? it's idiotic.
