What really makes Wonder Woman's romance special is how brilliantly it rewrites the typical superhero movie love story. In the film, Diana (Gal Gadot) is the powerful one, while Steve Trevor is of course the vulnerable mortal.

That getting-to-know-you boat scene is an instant classic of not just superhero romance but comic book cinema as a whole, building their budding romance with a relaxed, endearing awkwardness.

But crucially, director Patty Jenkins doesn't force the romance along for most of the movie, nor does she linger on the particulars of their physical encounters, leaving the viewer to parse a lot of the innuendo themselves.

And of course, it's inevitably layered with tragedy, as Steve sacrifices himself to save the day, leaving Diana with a century's worth of emotional turmoil. Fingers are crossed that Steve's apparent resurrection in Wonder Woman 1984 doesn't screw it all up.

Between their fantastic chemistry and the film powerfully establishing them as partners both in love and on the battlefield, this is the DCEU's single romantic success to date.
