Make no mistake, The LEGO Movie is a superhero movie alright. Why else would Batman be in it?

The great thing about the gradual romance between Emmet (Chris Pratt) and Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks) is that he's an aloof goofball while she's a Master Builder (effectively a superhero in LEGO terms).

She's proven to be smart and resourceful throughout the two movies and basically the total antithesis of Emmet. And yet, the two grow closer over the course of their first adventure to stop President Business (Will Ferrell).

That's not to forget the hilarity of Wyldstyle still being a tad tied up with Batman (Will Ferrell), either.

The recent sequel takes their romance another step further, by lampooning superhero and general blockbuster love story tropes, demonising Emmet's bland idiocy and extolling Wyldstyle's enormous capability (which she doesn't receive nearly enough credit for).

It's hardly a red-blooded romance in human terms, but given that they're pieces of plastic, it's worth cutting them some slack. In terms of subverting tentpole expectations and inverting the typical romantic dynamic in superhero films, it works splendidly.
