12 Trash Movies (That You Definitely Love Anyway)

4. Waterworld

Universal Studios

Back when it was first released, Waterworld was criticised for its comically inflated costs (which are estimated at roughly $235 million with marketing included), and it always seemed to struggle with that weight around its neck. Eventually, it became profitable, thanks to home release, but for a while there, it looked like the turkey it was predicted to be.

It really didn't help those cynical expectations that the film is an over-blown epic that fails to add enough substance to its plot or characters to match the lavish sets and action set-pieces. In that respect, it's something of a gutless fish.

But it's nothing like the disaster it was painted in terms of the experience it sells. Waterworld is sort of like a marriage of Mad Max and an old school Western, and while it probably needed a more charismatic lead character, it's the kind of big money popcorn movie that really gets you excited. And that's definitely something to love.
