Steven Spielberg tackles one of his most uniquely ambitious projects to date with this adaptation of Ernest Cline's beloved, award-winning 2011 novel, which takes place in a mid-2000s dystopia where people enter the world of virtual reality to escape their real-life problems.
Protagonist Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) battles to discover a video game Easter egg which will grant him inconceivable wealth, while facing off against other players wishing to claim it for themselves or others.
With a terrific cast including Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg and Mark Rylance, Ready Player One has the potential to be a spirited adaptation of Cline's novel and an earnest celebration of pop culture, as long as it can avoid pandering to the audience too much or just becoming Nostalgia: The Movie.
Spielberg rarely puts a foot wrong, so it's easy to be excited about this one. Plus, The Iron Giant's in it. Get hype.
