13 Actors You Didn't Know Almost Played The Joker

By Jack Pooley /

13. David Bowie

When director Tim Burton and screenwriter Sam Hamm were considering casting options for 1989's Batman, music mega-God David Bowie was briefly considered, with Hamm claiming, "Bowie would be kind of neat because he's very funny when he does sinister roles". Would It Have Worked?: Absolutely. The best touchstones of comparison for Bowie are his performances in Labyrinth and as the humanoid alien in the classically weird sci-fi The Man Who Fell to Earth, in which he bats away any suggestion that he's just another musician getting in way over his head. Also, given the campy, musical vibe of Nicholson's Joker, Bowie would likely have been able to waltz through those scenes in his sleep, and created a creepy Joker all his own.
