After both the 2009 and 2011 Guy Ritchie-directed Sherlock Holmes movies grossed north of $500 million worldwide, it seemed like a third film would release no later than 2014 or 2015 at a stretch.

However, Robert Downey Jr.'s increasing box office viability and popularity since the release of The Avengers has no doubt only made things more difficult, not to mention the fact that Guy Ritchie's going to be kept busy in post-production on his live-action Aladdin movie for the next year-plus.

The cast and crew seem genuinely eager for the film to get made, but soon enough a third Sherlock movie will risk becoming another Sin City: A Dame to Kill For: a belated sequel audiences wanted to see at a time, but have ultimately moved on from.

There's no chance Sherlock Holmes 3 can release before 2020, and at almost a decade in gestation, Warner Bros. will probably decide to just leave it be.
