Rotten Tomatoes Score: 98% (8.7/10) Why It Deserves Best Picture: For one, it's among the very best reviewed films of the year, an exquisite drama revolving around Geoff (Tom Courtenay), who receives a call that the perfectly-preserved body of his ex-girlfriend has been discovered in Switzerland five decades after she fell down a crevasse. For his wife Kate (Charlotte Rampling), this causes a major upheaval as she comes to re-evaluate everything she's shared with Geoff over the years. Far away from the emotionally manipulative Hollywood dramas we're spoonfed as awards season goes full speed, this is a fantastically subtle, quiet film about anxiety and the ability for one revelation to completely upend a sizable chunk of one's life. Courtenay and Rampling give two of the best performances of the year and their own careers, while the movie itself is a gentle marvel of unspoken tension. Why It Won't Get Nominated: It's far too subtle and art-house for the Oscars, and so the best it can probably hope for is an acting nod for one or both of the leads, though even that's not hugely likely.
