Why It Deserves Best Picture: Yorgos Lanthimos' latest blackly-dark comedy is a masterclass in surreal, uneasy suspense, getting an arguably career-best performance out of Colin Farrell as a man placed in a most peculiarly unsettling predicament (but saying anymore would be too much).

Simply, there's not a single other movie released this year remotely like it, and rather than just mine its darker aspects for easy shock value, Lanthimos' handle of tone is devilishly clever and meticulously conceived throughout.

Why It Won't Get Nominated: It's too damn weird, and with a current worldwide box office gross of just $1.6 million, it'd need to rely heavily on awards screeners to get any traction at all.

It might get a Best Original Screenplay nod if it's lucky, but Best Picture just isn't happening.
