9. 2001 Pod In Watto's Junkyard

If you're looking for easter eggs (or replacement hyperdrives), it can't get much better than Watto's shop; you can see the pod-racer Anakin smashed up, as well as a battered 21B medical droid. But by far the best is one that reaches out far beyond the realms of Star Wars.

As Watto and Qui-Gon are walking into the junkyard you can clearly see one of the EVA pods from 2001: A Space Odyssey. So, are 2001 and Star Wars in the same universe? Maybe the monoliths were actually hyperdrives, with Dave Bowman's transformation into Star-Child something Force-inflected and one day HAL and R2 will have the ultimate showdown.

Or maybe Lucas just wanted to reference one of the genre greats. That one we think.
