2. Audition (1999)
“Kiri kiri kiri kiri”
Look, if you’ve not seen Audition, genuinely skip this article and go check it out.
When I first watched it I knew nothing about it. The first two thirds are a jolly pleasant tale of a lonely widower’s attempt to find a new girlfriend. After auditioning several young ladies (hmm, bit weird) he finds his perfect match.
Then there’s a scene where something in a hessian sack suddenly moves.
Then there’s a scene where we find out what’s in the hessian sack.
Then the final ten minutes are utterly, jaw-droppingly, horrifying.
Audition succeeds in everything it sets out to do. It pushes horror and violence to their extremes, and it’s all the more effective because it takes it’s time to make us care about everyone involved. And horror in the home, inflicted on people we care for, is about as scary as it gets.
