John Michael McDonagh expertly melds gallows humour with genuine intrigue in this airy, thoughtful and superbly acted drama about a Priest (Brendan Gleeson) who is told by an unseen confessor that he will murder him in seven days.

Gleeson gives a towering performance, but he's also aided by exemplary supporting turns by Kelly Reilly, Aidan Gillen and Dylan Moran in particular, as well as lush cinematography that serves as a beautifully bleak love letter to Ireland.

That it manages to be both hilarious and grim without compromising on either is truly impressive.
