Though on paper it's hard to call Batman v Superman's box office haul a failure, it was most certainly a disappointment for Warner Bros., who were surely banking on an Avengers-sized, billion-plus payday for a blockbuster featuring not only the title characters, but also Wonder Woman.
In the weeks ahead of BvS' release, it was practically unthinkable it wouldn't crack a cool billion dollars, but due to poor reviews and a heavily divisive fan response, it experienced an historic 81.2% drop in its second weekend, cutting its legs off completely.
Even so, few could've anticipated that Black Panther would get close to its final total, let alone exceed it by almost half a billion dollars. What that says about the general audience's view of DC and Marvel is really quite fascinating.
